Alex  Alex F. Alvarez, Alabama MBOC Executive Director

 

 

As Executive Director of the Alabama Minority Business Opportunity center, Alex Alvarez is committed to implementing an aggressive, innovative, humanitarian, and strategic approach for the Alabama MBOC. “The key to exceeding goals are working with great teams, building and maintaining relationships and partnerships, and properly recognizing individuals for their contributions.” Alvarez comes to the Alabama MBOC with experience from both the public and non-profit sectors. Alvarez has vast experience in minority business development, supply chain management and supplier diversity. Alvarez brings over 5 years of procurement/financial management experience to the Alabama MBOC office.

  

Before joining the Alabama MBOC, Alvarez served for five years within the purchasing arena, most recently being a Global Creativity Team Leader for General Motors World Wide Purchasing in Michigan managing a team annual purchase value of over $800 million globally. While at General Motors, Alvarez consistently exceeded his cost savings and diversity targets. Alvarez played a pivotal role in his contributions with the Chemical Exterior/Miscellaneous Moldings Team that won an award for the highest cost-savings percentage in all of GM Worldwide Purchasing. Alvarez was the Global Creativity Team Leader for two different teams on two different occasions within the General Motors Corporation. Alvarez was also was honored to be the Supplier Diversity Champion for 2 different teams within GM.  

In addition, Alvarez has served for nearly a decade on numerous levels within his national fraternity, Omega Delta Phi, most recently as a National Vice President. Alvarez founded the Young Knights Leadership Academy, a social action non-profit corporation, now an auxiliary group or subsidiary of Omega Delta Phi, which was adopted nationally. Their primary objective is to help underrepresented students gain entrance to college and provide them the mentoring and leadership development necessary to be successful. In 2006, Alvarez was honored as both the National Alumni of the Year for Omega Delta Phi, Inc. Alvarez was also awarded the National Rising Professional during National Latino Greek Awards Gala in Orlando, Florida from the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations and Latino University Magazine. 

  

Alvarez has also worked with Project H.O.P.E., a FEMA funded program designed to provide assistance to disaster funding applicants. Alvarez helped disaster victims in coping with the psychological aftermath of the disaster(s), aided them in the reduction of the stress or psychological harm caused by the traumatic experience, and helped them better comprehend their situation and reactions to the disaster. Alvarez also assisted in the provision of emotional support and encouraged linkage with other individuals and agencies to assist with additional support and information to facilitate the process of recovery.  Alvarez currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Alabama Latin-American Association (A.L.A.S.) and the United Way of Central Alabama’s Agency Review Committee.  

Alvarez is proud of his record of providing assistance to those in need and he “looks forward to working hand in hand with the great communities across the state to aid in strengthening and growing Alabama enterprises and helping to boost the wealth and competitiveness of the state.”

Alvarez holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Supply Chain Management from Michigan State University and a Masters in Business Administration specializing in International Business & Marketing from Wayne State University. Alvarez has also attained the C.P.M. and A.P.P. designations from the Institute for Supply Management.    Alvarez was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and was raised in the towns of Belle Glade and Pahokee, Florida. In his spare time, Alvarez is an avid sports fan and enjoys reading.
